Don't think of me as being a jerk, think of this as the kick in the *** that you need. Tell him what you just told us. The only ones that can can change this situation are you and him. You know what you want to put all your cards on the table and let him know. If you two are as good of friends as you say then if he says no you shouldn't have to worry about him not liking you. But if he says yes then you're golden.
